Barbara has been selected as one of 25 finalists for this year's Montalto Sculpture Prize.
The sculptures are installed on the grounds of Montalto from the 24th of January. Winner is selected by a panel of 5 judges. Winner will be announced at the opening of the exhibition on the 15th of February.

Exhibition continues until the 1st of May.

Graham Byrne is a finalist in a competition to paint 1 of 8 traffic signal boxes , some of which can be seen, already painted, in the Leichhardt, Balmain areas. His box is outside the Royal Hotel in Norton St, cnr Carlisle St, and will be done in the next couple of weeks. Originally , the design was about Callan Park, being close to there, the moons referrring to psychiatric patients, and the dogs to the now wonderful space for them and people. It is odd enough to fit anywhere.

Gail Kenning's digital animation

Gail Kenning and Sue Pedley share an interest in pattern and processes. Kenning works with form, structure, code and data to create patterns that seemingly dissolve into random or develop into chaos.


Sue Pedley's fabric collage

These emerging patterns are exhibited in the form of programmed animations and physical lace, woven or knitted artefacts. Pedley draws out patterns of cross-cultural connections between people, places and objects. These patterns are exhibited as animations and collages. The recent body of work involves interweaving paper and textiles found in an abandoned house while developing an installation for the Setouchi International Art Festival (2010) in Japan.

Gail Kenning is a UK-born Sydney-based artist and researcher. Kenning completed a program of research at the Royal College of Art in London working alongside the Fine Art Tapestry course and was awarded a PhD in Art Theory from UNSW for practice-based experimental research exploring textile pattern forms in digital media. Kenning has completed residencies and exhibited in UK, US, Australia and Vietnam. She recently presented digital video animations at the International Symposium of Electronic Art in Belfast and Textile Society of America Symposium in USA and will exhibit at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney in 2011. She has also been involved in the development of software applications in both professional and creative environments.

Sue Pedley is a Sydney based artist who explores ways to experiment with materials and their relationship to place, and to reformulate basic elements of time, light and space. Pedley has undertaken Australia Council Residencies and projects in France, Germany, London, Vietnam, Japan, an Asia Link residency in Sri Lanka, and a Walking and Art Residency in Banff, Canada. Exhibitions include Blue Jay Way, Heide Museum of Contemporary Art and Penrith Regional Gallery Lewers Bequest (2007). She was an invited participatant in Setouchi International Art Festival (2010) and Echigo Tsumari Art Triennial (2006).

Some Ultimo Project Studio artists will be opening their studios to the public as part of the Open Day Program organised by Juan Carlos Rios, the Cultural Development Worker of Addison Road Centre (ARC).

Art works will be exhibited at the UP Space Gallery.

This site responsive work explores systems, patterns and structures of places. Using data collected over a period of time, this material will be digitally sutured into transparencies, turning SLOT into a light box. The exhibition will be accompanied by an online work – an animation relating to the projected images.

The project is part of a wider project connecting art venues from SLOT to Alice Springs, to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and Beijing, China over the next two years. SLOT is the first in the chain of installations.

UP Space Gallery is established by the artists' collective, Ultimo Project Studios Inc. It is an Artist’s Run Space and a not-for-profit organisation. Its inauguration began last year with the group’s Salon Show.

The aim is to provide a space to enter into a dialogue of visual arts for both unrepresented professional artists and emerging artists.

The John Fries Memorial Prize 2010 is an award of $10,000 and a solo exhibition at Viscopy's contemporary art space, Blackfriars off Broadway.

Art Melbourne 2010 will mark the tenth Off The Wall. We have helped over 220 artists gain representation since 2006 and have helped launch some very successful careers by spotting significant emerging talent. This really is the Art World equivalent of “So you think you can dance”!

Off The Wall is generously supported by Art Almanac, who provide stunning colour catalogues at each event and advertise the event in their essential Australian gallery guide. The 2010 Off The Wall is dedicated to the loving memory of Janice McCulloch, who not only was the Editor in Chief of Art Almanac and great supporter of Off The Wall and all of the artists involved, she was also an extremely avid collector of emerging Australian art, a wonderful mother and very dear friend.

Sculpture 2010 is an annual event held in January with selected Sydney galleries to promote sculpture as an art form.

This year the curated sculpture group show is held at Brenda May Gallery.

Exhibition dates: 13 - 31, January.

Geoff Hague Selected for Studio Furniture 2010

Studio Furniture 2010 is an Australian Wood Review competition for furniture designers/makers organised with and sponsored by Bungendore Wood Works Gallery.

This year, 128 entries were assessed. Selected and award-winning works will be shown at Bungendore Wood Works Gallery from Jan 23 to March 31, 2010.

Criteria for studio furniture is one-of-a-kind or limited edition work made by an individual designer/maker. It is not mass produced. The furniture reflects the maker's signature in style and skill.

Bungendore Wood Works Gallery (BWWG) in NSW is one of Australia’s premier galleries for wood and last year celebrated 25 years of presenting the finest woodwork to a growing number of buyers. BWWG is again sponsoring $10,000 prize money to competition entrants, in addition to the opportunity to have their work featured in their gallery. There are three awards: First prize $5,000, Second $3,000, Third $2,000.

The Toyota Community Spirit Gallery : Calling for Submissions from Emerging Artists

The Toyota Community Spirit Gallery is calling for submissions from emerging artists to exhibit in our Emerging Artist exhibition in March 2010.

A broad range of contemporary and traditional works across all mediums is sought from artists from diverse social and cultural backgrounds. The focus is on local artists from the cities of Port Phillip and Hobsons Bay but the program is also open to regional and interstate artists in Australia.

There is no cost to exhibit and no commission charged on sales of work. Established in 2004, the Gallery runs a continuous program of exhibitions at Toyota’s corporate headquarters in Port Melbourne and has shown the works of over 490 artists.

Successful applicants are eligible to apply for the $10,000 Toyota Community Spirit Artist Travel Award.

In the context of ANONYMOUS DRAWINGS a selection of drawings by international artists will be presented anonymously at KUNSTRAUM KREUZBERG / BETHANIEN. The general exhibition preparation starts with an international call for entries on the Internet. No demands are being made; age, biography or heritage of the originator do not play any role for the selection.

The artist's anonymity can be lifted by means of purchasing a drawing for the symbolic unit sales price of 150 EUR. The buyer can take his drawing right off the wall and s/he is then told the name of its author. The empty space the drawing leaves behind will be marked with the artist‘s full name and country of origin.

The given unit sales price should not be seen as a real market price, but as a place holder for any conceivable amount of money. Because the works are from both established artists and laymen, it is expected from the viewer to draw his own line between art and not-art. Common, art specific mechanisms like the importance of an artists` ego, price formation or prepared qualities which can be referred to a specific art context, should be reversed in this exhibition in an experimental way: the artists engage themselves to put their own person into the background for the benefit of the actual product, their artistic work.

Barbara Licha - Finalist of Willoughby Sculpture Prize 09

In my sculpture I try to create the conditions of human experience where we are surrounded by constant expansion of information and a multitude of tasks. I use the wire line, almost suspended in space, to suggest human fragility, feeling of isolation and contemplation.

In Early March 2010 Quarterbred will be curating the second Tiny Stadiums Festival throughout Erskineville.

For the Tiny Stadiums Festival Quarterbred aims to program art projects that have innovative audience experiences at their core.

The overall festival aims to include: a season of two performance/ live works at PACT theatre, a video library, a rooftop cinema, artist talks, a launch party and a weekend of site-specific live and visual artworks in Erskineville village.

Check out our website to get a sense of what the 2009 festival entailed. Interactive, site specific and cross-artform projects are particularly encouraged. All projects must take place in Erskineville.

You may like to respond to one of these spaces in your idea: PACT theatre, a school, a railway station, Erskineville town hall, a churchm A vacant lot, an empty shopfront, a Laundromat, a pub, a bus stop, a café, a playground, a small park, a parking lot, a street tour of Erskineville, a post office.

Your idea need not be themed around these spaces but be flexible to fit within public spheres. Please note that not all of these spaces are confirmed as available at this stage.

In your application please include:

- Your contact details and a paragraph biography
- A description of your idea
- The audience experience your project
- Basic technical requirements.

You will be asked to present a development or talk about you idea in late October 2009.

Artists will receive:
-An artist fee
-Inclusion in a large marketing campaign for the festival

Barbara Licha Selected for the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing 2009

Barbara's drawing, The Hermit, has been selected for this year's Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing.

In Barbara's words: The sequence of "The Hermit" relates back to the memories and experiences of my journey to the Kimberley. I often go back there in my thoughts. I could not forget the power of the land and its spirituality.

The strength of the land and the human fragility, the earth and its infinity is the subject I am interested in at the moment. I try to depict feelings of isolation, contemplation, loneliness and show importance of individual self knowledge.

In The Hermit drawings I also use the graphic elements which for became the symbol of the earth and infinity.

The opening for the Adelaide Perry Prize for Drawing Exhibition 7.00 pm Friday 27 February at Adelaide Perry Gallery, corner Hennessy Street and College Street, Croydon NSW.

Exhibition continues until March 28.

The ULTIMO PROJECT artists’ studios evolved out of the artists’ space movements of the late nineteen seventies and early nineteen eighties. These were loose collectives of artists working with an initiative from the Artworkers Union aimed towards securing affordable housing and studio spaces for artists.

The Ultimo Project itself began in 1985 and became an incorporated Association in 1988. The organisation is managed by a voluntary committee of president, secretary, treasurer and up to six ordinary members and is generally self-funded. There have, however, been three or four instances of small amounts of financial assistance from the Australia Council for the Arts since the group’s inception. The group began in Ultimo (thus the name), then moved to Hereford Street, Glebe for six years. They then moved to Coulson Street, Erskineville for eight and a half years and 6 years ago moved again, taking up occupancy of premises at Addison Road Centre, Marrickville.

The aim of the Association since formation has remained primarily to function as a model studio, providing long-term, secure and affordable work spaces for member artists. The organisation currently has twenty fully occupied studios (some shared) with a long waiting list.

Many prominent artists started at the Ultimo Project studios. Artists have traditionally thrived in inner city areas such as Darlinghurst, Glebe and Newtown, valuing the older industrial parts of Sydney where rents were affordable and spaces not pristine. As such spaces are rapidly disappearing from the inner city due to gentrification and development, the serious scarcity of workspace for Sydney’s artists remains an issue of major concern.

The Addison Road Centre is one of the few remaining locations close to the city where artists’ studios can exist, and provides (due to it’s history, other tenants and the centre’s physical attributes) a “natural” home for an artistic community. It presents an opportunity and a location that the Ultimo Project artists intend to develop for many years to come, building a greater focus for the increasing number of arts practitioners in the Marrickville Local Government Area.

The Ultimo Project artists comprise furniture makers, fabric artists, sculptors, painters, photographers, installation artists and more.

The collective operates UP Space Gallery adjoining to the studio complex. It is a not-for-profit, artist run space. The space provides a professional platform for show casing works by both emerging and professional artists who are unrepresented by the commercial galleries. It is also a way for the members to engage with the wider community of art practitioners, and by so doing, contribute to the enrichment of Sydney's visual arts culture.
